Collecting the Sample
Using a q-tip, swab your pet's ears. Try to get the most debris or wax you can to provide the best possible sample. You do not have to go deep into the canal, the debris from the outer ear is sufficient. Only one q-tip per ear is needed. Once you see a little dirt on the q-tip or a change in color, such as to brown or black, then your sample is sufficient. Click here for an image of a sufficient q-tip sample.
Mailing the Sample
When sending your sample, place the q-tips in a plastic ziploc bag and include your pet's name, indicate whether it is a cat or dog, and age, so we can give you the best treatment recommendations.

Finding the Cause of the Ear Infection
There are several kinds of bacteria and at least one type of fungus which commonly causes ear infections. Without knowing the kind of infection present, it is difficult to know how to treat your pet. By examining a sample of the material from the ear canal under a microscope, we can determine the type of organism causing the infection.
